Disappointment in the Time of Trimesters
On a whim, I signed up for the 15 day free trial of Carbonite. You may be a long-enough-timer here to remember that my old PC melted down two years ago, taking everything with it (except for the back-up disk with my fiction on it, thank Odin). I did this because of that, and also because I’m in the process of switching over to a less-crappy semi-newer machine once my brother mails me the disk with Word on it, making the newer machine useful as something other than a closet-filling tanicle (tanicle being the word for tan cube-like device).
Well, the little lock icon turned green after a day, indicating that my machine was backed up. I checked the backed-up files and was disturbed to notice it did not back up Quicken, photos or iTunes – or, that is, that I have not figured out, yet, how to determine if it backed those up. Carbonite says it backs up every file on your computer, but if it doesn’t back up photos and iTunes, this is a lie. Okay, so I have the photos and videos backed-up on disks, but my iTunes library is bigger than my iPod and I haven’t figured out how to follow the directions (it should be simple, but it just doesn’t work as described) to move my iTunes library off-site to a secondary storage device.
So, yes, I was hoping for a quick and easy way to transfer everything from this PC to the newer PC, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. Nuts. I mean, yes, I’ve googled around and Carbonite is said to back up those files, but there’s no green dot next to my photos or iTunes, and the Carbonite interface window doesn’t show them backed up, so, well, I don’t know if they are backed up.

I really liked this post. Can I copy it to my site? Thank you in advance.
